A exceptional Korean Koryo Style Signed Celadon Ewer. Stands 10 1/2 tall without stand, of bulbous pear form with narrow neck and flared rim decorated with medallions of chrysanthemums, flying cranes, clouds, banding and lotus petals with an applied handle having a decorative twist at the top. The bottom with underglaze artist signature. The glaze shows typical crackle. With carved wood stand. Korean celadon is renowned, especially for its pale, jade-colored glaze, which exhibits the potters advanced understanding of color composition at that time. Although Koryos early celadon was influenced by the Chinese, Korean potters developed the borrowed art to a new and unique level. The Koreans added graceful designs onto the surface of the ceramics by using the remarkable inlaying technique, an entirely Korean invention.
