Ref. no. 42 in "Chagall's Posters - A Cataloque Raisonne', Sorlier.As a part of Chagall's project on painting the Old Testament, he went to Palestine to experience the holy Land for himself. He stayed for two months, visiting the Wailing Wall and feeling at home among the Yiddish speaking populous. Chagall stated that "in the East I found the Bible and part of my on being." Chagall's impression of the Bible is clearly one of awe. "I did not see the Bible," he told Meyer, "I dreamed it. Ever since early childhood, I have been captivated by the Bible. It has always seemed to me and still seems today the greatest source of poetry of all time."
