ORVILLE WRIGHT
(1871 - 1948) American inventor and a pioneer of flight, Wright, with his brother Wilbur, made the first successful flight of a motor-driven airplane. Uncommon D.S. "Orville Wright" as Chairman of the National Aeronautic Association of U.S.A., 6pp. 3" x 4 1/4", an "Aviator's Certificate" no. 7240 issued to pilot Kenneth E. Gabbert, , Aug. 20, 1929, certifying that the aviator had "fulfilled all conditions required by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, as the governing authority for the United States of AmericaÉfor an Aviator Pilot...". With blind-embossed seal tying Sheldon's photo to his signature on page 2, signed by Wright on the front paste-down. Very good. Gabbert was born in Nemaha County, KS on August 11, 1896. He served in World War I in the Army Signal Corps and received the Croix de Guerre. On July 10, 1930 Gabbert was piloting a Vega near Corpus Christi when the aircraft lost a wing and crashed, killing all five aboard.
