Description
Description: An oil on masonite painting of sunset in the Florida Everglades. Signed on lower left. This 24 x 36" painting is housed in a 4" wide wooden frame.
History: One of the Florida African-American painters known as the Highwaymen, Harold Newton and the others were landscapists with a fanciful, formula style that involved billowing cumulus clouds and the ocean. The group included Newton, James Gibson, and Alfred Hair, and were influenced by Albert E Backus, the "dean of Florida landscape painting." Typically they painted on upson board, a manufactured product used by roofers, and they framed their works with crown molding and sold the paintings from their car trunks. James Andrew "Harold" Newton was born in Gifford, Florida on October 30, 1934. He moved to Tifton, Georgia at an early age, where he attended Industrial Elementary and High School. In 1954, at age 20, he returned to Gifford where he began his painting career. Through the years, Harold lived and painted all over the state of Florida. Harold Newton’s color sense was well versed and his emotional range was varied and well communicated. He looked at the world around him and envisioned how to construct a landscape scene that wasn’t readily visible to an ordinary observer. He showed you how to see Florida’s grand scenery in a new way. There is no doubt that he was one of the most accomplished and talented of the all the Highwaymen.
