Description
WALTER MEIGS (1918-1988, America), 'Illuminated Horizon', Oil and textured substrate on canvas, 1976. Signed, titled and dated on verso. Framed: 17.5”h x 19”W; Canvas: 16.5"h x 18.18"w. Includes gallery card from opening in 1981 at the Foster Harmon Galleries of American Art. Meigs has work in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. 1969.47.30. BIOGRAPHY: Studied at Syracuse University, The State University of Iowa and the Ecole de Beaux Arts at Fontainebleau. He headed the Art Department at the University of Connecticut and in 1960 was featured in a series of exhibitions with Lee Nordness in New York, “Distinguished Exhibitions of American Art” and was included in “ART: USA” an international traveling exhibition of American art and crafts assembled and sponsored by Johnson Wax Company. Through the 1960s and 1970s he lived between Greece, the Bahamas, Spain and the Canary Islands exhibiting through Foster Harmon Galleries of American Art.
PROVENANCE: Frederic C. 'Fritz' Wallace (1904 – 2014, Germany, America) was born in Munich, Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1938 and served with the Army for three years in the ‘European Theater of Operations’ (ETO). He traveled extensively throughout the globe, collecting with an extremely educated focus and uncommon eye. Truly devoted to research for his collection, Mr. Wallace ensured that he purchased the rarest of interested items in only the best of condition. A fortunate Realtor and Developer, he lived in Sarasota, where he was a patron of the arts and served for many years on the Board of Directors at the historic Asolo Repertory Theatre.
