Item Details
Description
Greco-Persian, ca. 800 to 600 BCE. A beautiful silver phiale or wine bowl with a flaring rim, three incised circles abstractly representing an omphalos in the tondo. The lustrous surface persists on the interior, while a green and russet encrusted patina has developed across the exterior with a smattering upon the interior surface. This form is typical of classical Greco-Persian vessels of the period and was likely invented by the Persian culture and further elaborated upon by the Greeks. A lovely example! Provenance: Ex-Sarkisian Gallery, Denver, Colorado, acquired in the 1950's, Displayed, Denver Art Museum (1960's)
