Description
MILHAUD DARIUS: (1892-1974) French Composer, a member of Les Six. A.M.Q.S., Milhaud, to the verso of a 4 x 4.5 photograph of the composer, the image depicting him in a close-up semi-profile head and shoulders pose, n.p., n.d. The composer has penned a holograph stave with seven bars of music, being the opening theme for alto saxophone from his ballet composition La creation du monde (Op. 81a, 1922-23). Milhaud has added the title of the work in his hand immediately beneath the quotation. Some traces of former mounting to the recto, affecting the edges of the image, otherwise VG
La creation du monde, a ballet in six continuous parts, was inspired by Milhaud's encounters with 'authentic' jazz on the streets of Harlem during his visit to the United States in 1922. His work was written a year prior to George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue (1924) which also combined elements of classical music with jazz influenced effects.
