Description
Duke Ellington rose above racism and segregation to achieve greatness, and he chronicled and honored the black American experience along the way with works such as "Black, Brown, and Beige," and "My People." In 1959, the NAACP recognized Duke's achievements with one of its highest honors- the Spingarn Medal, an award bestowed to such greats as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Langston Hughes, and Maya Angelou. The medal is engraved: "Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington, Presented New York, N.Y., September 11, 1959."
