Description
The Japanese were huge fans of Duke Ellington, and Duke was a huge fan of the Japanese. During the Duke Ellington Orchestra's 1966 State Department tour of Japan, Duke fell under the thrall of Japanese fabrics. As he traveled, he chose several silks to be sent back to his tailor, Gaetano of Chicago. This custom-tailored, cream-colored suit jacket was one that resulted from Duke's tour of Japan. It is labeled "Duke Ellington, June 24 1966." He wore this jacket in performances and was photographed in it.
