Description
Ancient Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A solid bronze cast figurine depicting the youthful god of commerce, Mercury in Roman mythology, Hermes in Greek mythology, standing in classic contraposto position depicted nude aside from his traditional attributes, namely the winged helmet befitting of this messenger of the gods atop his finely delineated wavy coiffure and the flowing chlamys or traveler's cloak over his left forearm, associated with Mercury because of his activities as messenger and guide to souls of the underworld. Mercury was a traveler, after all, who was never at rest. He also holds a herald’s staff, or caduceus, with two entwined snakes at the top, in his right hand. This staff was believed to possess magical powers, one of which was to inspire a dream oftentimes associated with a sudden death. Figurines depicting deities such as this were usually used as votive offerings brought to temples or kept at more intimate home shrines for private worship. A lovely and quite early example from the ancient Romans with gorgeous deep green patina. Custom, metal stand. Size: figurine itself measures 3.75" H (9.5 cm); 4" (10.2 cm)H on stand
