Description
Japan, late Edo to early Meiji period, ca. 1850. Lovely inro in lacquered wood with netsuke in bronze in the form of a duck and amber ojime. The 4-part box is decorated with a kneeling monk on one side, his mouth open as if chanting, chopsticks in front of him resting in rectangular basin. On the other side is a badger that came out of the cattle that was polished by the monk. The pictures on the sides are illustrations of the very famous Japanese fairy tale of "The Tea Kettle." All of the original gold is still in place and the box is stunning! Size of box only - Size: 3.25" H (8.3 cm)
Provenance: from the Paul and Louise Bernheimer collection of Japanese Edo and Meiji Perood Netsukes, Cambridge, MA and Laguuna Woods, Ca. Acquired before 1980.
