Description
Philippines, Ifugao, ca. 19th century CE. A finely carved black wooden spoon, the handle carved with an abstract human standing figure with its head leaning back and looking upward, both hands placed just above the hips, legs separated, and feet presenting with pointed toes. Ifugao spoons are known for their decoration. Sculptors usually focus on the handle as we see in this example. This example is lovely for its beautiful patina and the abstract representation of the figure who most likely represents an ancestor or deity. For a similar example, see Ellis, G. The People and Art of the Philippines, Los Angeles, 1981, fig. 210. Size: 8.875" L (22.5 cm)
