Description
19th century AD. A gold graduate ring from the Russian page corps with enamelled maltese cross and steel insert, inscribed to the outer face 'MON DIEU MON ROI MA DAME' (my god, my king, my lady"). 5 grams, 21.07mm overall, 17.55mm internal diameter (approximate size British O 1/2, USA 7 1/4, Europe 55 1/4, Japan 14"). (3/4"). Property of an American collector; acquired 1980-2000. Page Corps was a military academy in Imperial Russia, which prepared sons of the nobility and of senior officers for military service. The students served on a rotational basis as pages at Court and provided services at ceremonies, including attendance upon individual members of the Imperial family. Graduates from the Corps des Pages had the unique privilege of joining the regiment of their own choice regardless of the existing vacancies. As serving officers they wore, on the left side of their tunic, the badge of the Corps des Pages, modelled after the cross of the Order of St John. The Corps had a range of uniforms for different purposes, with the most spectacular of these being the gala uniform worn for Court functions. This comprised a spiked helmet with white plume, a dark green tunic with gold braid covering the front, white breeches and high boots. The school effectively ceased to function following the overthrow of Tsar Nicholas II in February 1917, but was finally closed in June the same year.
