Description
Messapia, Apulia, Southern Italy, 7th to 3rd centuries BCE. This is a ceramic plate of circular form decorated with linear band in brown on orange clay running around the rim. The form is simple and beautiful, with a concave shape running to a small, perfectly circular foot. This is probably an early example of Messapian pottery based on its geometric decoration -- later examples, with more Greek influence, had less abstract design. Size: 8" W x 1.9" H (20.3 cm x 4.8 cm).
