Description
Richard Wagner Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bilfolium (now detached), 5.5" x 8.5", with original transmittal envelope addressed in his hand. Bayreuth, January 5, 1876. A letter in German (untranslated) to Alfred Jachmann, the husband of his niece Johanna Jachmann-Wagner. After years of planning and fundraising, Wagner would launch the first Bayreuth Festival on August 13, 1876. The Festival was conceived by Wagner to showcase his own work, and took years of planning and fundraising. His niece Johanna, a mezzo-soprano singer who was the original performer and inspiration for several of his operas, would perform at the Festival that year.
Written at an important time and place relative to Wagner's work, this letter is worthy of translation.
Condition: Uniformly toned, with a small tear with paper loss occurring at top left of page three. Originally a bifolium, the pages have been separated, as evidenced by the margins. Single horizontal mail fold. The envelope has tears and chipping at top, where it was originally opened. A few stray ink spots.
