Description
Near East, Syro-Hittite, ca. 2800 to 1500 BCE. This is a very rare miniature terracotta figure of a cart with four wheels, an upward curving base, and a similarly curved top covering over the body of the wagon. The covering is probably meant to invoke cloth over a frame. This piece is part of a long tradition in the ancient Near East of pottery figures depicting both religious themes and themes of every day life. A piece like this one was probably a ritual offering and probably once had associated figures -- oxen, humans -- and maybe accessories like small offerings placed inside of it. Size: 4.75" L x 5.8" W x 5.8" H (12.1 cm x 14.7 cm x 14.7 cm).
