Description
James Rosenquist (American, B. 1933)
"Night Smoke II"
Signed lower right: "Rosenquist 1969-72"
1969-1972
Lithograph on paper Edition 19/27
Publisher: Universal Limited Art Editions Inc., New York
Image: 16 1/2" x 22"
Framed: 22 1/4" x 30 3/4"
Provenance: Campbell Ewald, acquired the print circa 1970 from Findlay Galleries, Chicago, IL.
Bio: James Rosenquist’s talent as an artist was recognized while he was still in high school, when he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Minneapolis School of Art. Later, after continuing his studies at the University of Minnesota as an undergrad, Rosenquist won another scholarship to attend the Art Students’ League in New York City. He attended classes taught by artists like Robert Indiana; at the same time, he was designing store windows and painting billboards to earn a living. This early training in designing and creating billboard advertisements was evident in Rosenquist’s artistic body of work. His references to mass-produced goods and fragments of mass media, along with his “anonymous” style of painting, caused him to be regarded as one of the key figures in the development of Pop Art in the United States. Still producing large works of art, Rosenquist continues to create large-scale commissions for clients across the globe.
