Bio: Although Sam Francis is associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement in America, the artist was also very well known in Europe. In 1952 Francis had his first one-man show in Paris and became an accepted member of the young European avant-garde, even becoming associated with the French group called the Tachistes. After Paris, Francis traveled throughout the Far East, which led to the influences of Zen Buddhism in his work. His calligraphic handling of brushwork and the lyrical character of his fluid color also linked Francis to Japanese influences. During the last three decades of his life, Francis’s style of large-scale bright Abstract Expressionism was also closely associated with Color Field painting.
