[Annie Oakley/ALS & Shot Penny] Walter Havighurst. ANNIE OAKLEY OF THE WILD WEST. Macmillan Company, 1954. 8vo. Red and black cloth. Front hinge cracked. Dj’s front and rear panels placed in loose. Annie Oakley (1860-1926), born Annie Moses in rural Ohio, was a sharpshooter who performed in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West (1885-1902), then starred in a play, “The Western Girl.” Oakley also starred in “The Little Sure Shot of the Wild West” (1894), a film for the kinetoscope (Edison’s motion picture viewing device, for one pair of eyes at any given time, before the invention of modern motion pictures for movie theaters). Placed in loose is a penny that Annie Oakley shot through with an ALS on stationery of “The Carolina, Pinehurst, N. C.” 12mo. [3]pp, orig folds. Reads in full: “Dear Mrs. Langsdorf, I inclose [sic] a coin with the bullet in the center Will you please send it to your Friend with my compliments. I sincerely hope that he has fully recovered his health. And that we may have the pleasure of seeing him again. I also send a coin for you. It was his on the edge, and just turned overI We worked and caught it with a second shot. Yesterday was the first that I fired since you left hence the delay in sending the promised coin. With best wishes I am cordially [sic] yours Annie Oakley Pinehurst Feb. 8th 20.” Faint dampstain to lower left of letter’s text, possibly eliminating the rest of the date after “20.” Original envelope in Oakley’s hand mounted to unprinted area of half title, postmark only faintly stamped but probably Feb. 1922. Printed bookplate (“Jacob Loeb Langsdorf,” of Philadelphia, on ffep verso).
