Description
[Military] Indenture for the sale of land owned by “George Bomford and Susan Decatur, joint owners, both in the County of Washington, in the District of Columbia, of the one part, and John B. Clark of Essex County, in the State of New Jersey…” Mar. 6, 1822. Clark paid $150 for “…Lot numbered eight" (7th from top and 2nd line from bottom of 1st page). Countersigned by William Waters and R. S. Briscoe [Justices of the Peace]. [3]pp, docketed on 3rd page. Losses to text, split along folds. Sold with all faults. Bomford experimented with artillery and gunpowder, and invented bomb cannons (also known as “columbiads”) which remained in use during the Civil War. Columbiads combined the characteristics of guns, mortars, and howitzers. In 1832 he rose to the rank of Colonel and commanded the Ordnance Corps in Washington 1832-42, at which point he became inspector of arsenals, ordnance, arms, and munitions. During the War of 1812 he had been Assistant Commissary-General of Ordnance, and was the 8th person to graduate from West Point (1805). Bomford used the $150 from the land sale in this deed to buy Kalorama (an estate overlooking Rock Creek). Susan Decatur (1777-1850) was the widow of Commodore Stephen Decatur. Richard S. Briscoe (Justice of the Peace) commanded a company of Cavalry from the District of Columbia during the War of 1812.
