Yozo Hamaguchi (1909-2000)The Japanese artist Yozo Hamaguchi began to study sculpture in 1927 at Tokyo University of the Arts, but moved to Paris in 1930 in order to study painting and printmaking. At the beginning of the 2nd World War he returned to Japan, but again came to Paris in 1953. There Hamaguchi dealt primarily with the elaborate printing technique of mezzotint, which he developed to the mastery. His very reduced, quiet, almost meditative still lives in this technique -often in very small format– brought him international recognition. In 1981 Hamaguchi moved the USA and returned to Japan not before 1996. (hth)
