Description
Byzantine Empire, ca. 4th to 5th centuries CE. This is a fragmentary mold for making terra sigillata (literally, "clay bearing small images") decorative appliques. This depicts a ship with two sails -- probably a dromon, which was the most important ship in the Byzantine navy from the 5th to 12th centuries. It was a technological outgrowth and advancement of the Roman liburna. Dromon were galley ships, and in this depiction you can see the oars and what appear to be three rowers as well as two masts and sails. Size: 3" W x 3.7" H (7.6 cm x 9.4 cm)
