Description
Viking/Norse, Northern Europe, ca. 10th century CE. This piece of thin bronze has been lavishly worked to suggest entwined animal forms; it has small attachment holes. This appears to be in the classic Jellinge style of Viking art, with animals "S"-shaped and intertwined to form an open interlace pattern with diagonal symmetry; the heads are shown in profile. The type piece comes from Jellinge, Denmark, and the style persisted from 870 to 1000 CE, but the style was also common in the Viking-influenced areas of the British Isles, particularly at Kirk Michael on the Isle of Man. Size: 1.75" W x 2.25" H (4.4 cm x 5.7 cm).
