Important Roman Marble Relief of Medusa
Important Roman Marble Relief of Medusa
Item Details
Description
Roman Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. One of the most mesmerizing sculptural renditions of Medusa we have ever seen, this finely carved marble relief of the infamous mythical Gorgon monster with that captivating stare capable of turning people to stone and writhing serpents in her wavy coiffure will take your breath away. How fabulously ironic that the sculptor created a marble (stone) version of a snake haired mythical woman whose mere gaze could transform onlookers to stone! That visage is oh so beguiling and intriguingly humanized with her quixotic eyes so naturalistically rendered with heavy lids and gracefully arched brows, that wrinkle between her eyes or knitted brow that expresses utter determination, and the sensual, fleshy nature of her cheeks, heart-shaped lips, and cleft chin. Given the life-like quality of the face, this piece most likely portrayed the living monster rather than the severed head of the defeated figure. Given the generous dimensions of this piece, it was most likely part of an ancient Roman façade or pediment. Renderings of Medusa by the ancients were traditionally used to ward off evil, and throughout the ages, Medusa has been immortalized in countless works of art. Some of you may be familiar with the dramatic interpretations by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Peter Paul Rubens, Benevenuto Cellini, Gianlorenzo Bernini, Rene Lalique, Antonio Canova, and the list goes on. These artists of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical eras were inspired by ancient renderings of Medusa like this example. What's more, it is remarkable that this head survived the the onslaught of the early Christian campaigns that destroyed so many exceptional examples of so-called pagan art! Custom, museum quality stand. Size: head itself measures 5.25" deep x 12.25" W x 8.5" H (13.3 cm x 31.1 cm x 21.6 cm); 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on stand. NOTE: Extremely heavy - crating will be required.

Provenance: Ex-private CT. collection, acquired from Alexander Fine Art, 1999.
