Description
American School, Probably New England (First Quarter 19th Century), "Portrait of a Boy with a Bow", oil on canvas, unsigned, "Fowler Boy" incised on frame back, 29-1/2" x 29-1/2". Presented in a 19th-century giltwood frame. Provenance: The Estate of Karolyn Kuntz Westervelt, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Condition
The painting shows signs of professional restoration under UV light. Two 4" x 4" cracks to the mid-center background, and a 1-1/2" x 1-3/4" crack to the bridge of the sitter's nose and left eye were repaired before the canvas was relined. There are also a few very small scattered areas of inpainting, mostly to the background edges. Light craquelure is present throughout the sitter's jacket. In overall good condition - the degree of restoration is consistent with age.
