Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A brown-black slipped pottery mummy mask of an expressive countenance with a long and narrow protruding angular nose, small carved round concave eyes, diminuitive tab-shaped ears pierced with small holes, an open oval mouth, and four perforations along the rim for attachment. Since the eyes are not pierced, we believe this mask was not intended to be worn by ritual performers. Masks like this example were either worn as large pectorals or placed over the faces of the deceased. Old, custom metal wall hanging mount. Size: 6.25" W x 7.5" H (15.9 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private California collection, acquired in the 1960s from Harold Wagner also of California, passed to current owner by inheritance.
