A beautifully painted Egyptian wood panel, Late Period, c. 664 - 332 BC, from a piece of funerary furniture, depicting a central Djed pillar representing the god Osiris flanked by the four Sons of Horus, two to either side. Each figure is depicted mummiform wearing a striated headdress with lappets, their features delicately rendered in fine style. A vertical column of hieroglyphs is to either side of the central Djed pillar and a solid blue border flanked by black lines encloses the scene. The Sons of Horus represented the four canopic jars which formed part of the funerary assemblage, each god protecting a certain part of the body. On the left is baboon-headed Hapi who represented the eastern direction and protected the lungs and human-headed Imsety, who represented the southern direction and protected the liver. On the right jackal-headed Duamutef can be seen who represented the eastern direction and protected the stomach and also hawk-headed Qebehsenuef who represented the western direction and protected the intestines.The panel is well preserved with very well preserved pigment and areas of light mineral deposits. 26 1/2 in x 10 3/4 in (67.2 x 27.3 cm).
