Fogarty, Frank Joseph (American, 1887-) Oil Painting. “Waning Day.” Oil on artist board. Signed lower right Frank Fogarty 1929. Also signed and titled on reverse. Retains two old labels. In good condition. Measures 12” x 16”. Frame measures 15” x 19”. Fogarty studied with Robert Henri and Jane Peterson and was a cartoonist. He worked on the comic strip Clarence from 1929 through 1948. He received the National Cartoonists Society Special Features Award in 1973.
From Lambiek Comiclopedia: Born in New York, Frank Fogarty got his artistic education at the Art Students League. He had his first work published in the New York Evening World when he was 16 years old. At the time, he specialized in sports and political cartoons. He improved his drawing and learned lettering when he was at the staff of the Sunday World. He eventually joined the American Press Association. Fogarty was art director of the New York Sun, and at Selznick Motion Pictures and Johnson Features. He has also worked for Warner Bros. He took over the 'Clarence' Sunday page from its creator Crawford Young, and continued it between 1930 and 1949. For 14 years, he has also drawn the 'Mr. & Mrs.' Sunday page for the Herald Tribune Syndicate.
