Brody, Iris (American, NY, died 1961) Young Woman in Polka-dot Dress. Oil on canvas painting. Incised in-paint signature “Iris Brody” on lower left. In good condition. Painting measures 18 ” x 15 ”. Frame measures 21 ” x 17 ”. Wife of Robert Boardman Vaughn, “The Unknown Poet.” Brody died of an overdose in 1961.
Iris Brody was a contemporary with William Burroughs and others during the Beatnik era. Lower East Side New York City artist, her work was collected by William Burroughs. Her painting of poet-musician Jackson Mac Low with recorder can be seen in the background of a famous photograph of Burroughs. Due to the unstable materials used to compose her pictures, many deteriorated within two decades.
