Description: Carved by Shinso Kikuchi and signed on the base. Figure holds his hat with a water bottle slung from a cord and a knapsack on his back. His kimono is texture engraved as are his leggings.

History: Shinsho whose actual name was Yasugoro Kikuchi was a representative member of the Ivory Carving Association of Japan after the War. One of the outstanding descendants of the Komei school, he was an excellent teacher as well as a carver and many of his pupils are well known in the world of ivory carving. Shinsho's specialty was the human figure and his only medium was ivory taking his subjects from poetry, they were elegant and beautiful. He worked past the age of 80 years from 9 to past 5 every day until shortly before the end of his life. He was declared a Japanese National Treasure for his artistry.
