Item Details
Description
Description: English tall case clock, manufactured by Thomas Lake, of Taunton, Sommerset, England, c.1790-1800. Eight day, cable driven movement. Beautiful mahogany case, balanced proportions, with a slender waist, it sits on bracket feet. The curved bonnet is flanked by solid pillasters. The raised panel door is in a gothic shape, with fluted columns along the sides. The case lock has a simple brass escutcheon (with key). The plainness of the base is made up for by the striking grain of the mahogany, and the elegant waist molding. Painted face, with brass center showing calendar aperture, and second hand sweep. Gilded spandrels surrounding face are of elaborate flowers. The highlight of this clock is the unusual automaton, above the face, of Boadicea, Queen of the Britons, riding in her chariot pulled by a pair of pegasus. The automaton is flanked by more spandrels of gilded dolphins.

History: A long case clock, also tall-case clock, floor clock, or grandfather clock, is a tall, freestanding, weight-driven pendulum clock with the pendulum held inside the tower, or waist of the case. Clocks of this style are commonly 6–8 feet tall. The case often features elaborately carved ornamentation on the hood (or bonnet), which surrounds and frames the dial, or clock face. The English clockmaker William Clement is credited with the development of this form in 1670. Until the early 20th century, pendulum clocks were the world's most accurate timekeeping technology, and longcase clocks, due to their superior accuracy, served as time standards for households and businesses. Today they are kept mainly for their decorative and antique value.
