Item Details

Description

Description: An engraved and hand colored portrait of Napoleon as emperor within an oval beneath his empirical crown and eagle. This surrounded by a panoply of flags and arms including rifles with bayonets affixed, swords, drums and canons and balls. The portrait rests on a plinth of 'marble', draped in swag. The use of silver and gold plated twisted thread, brass sequins and silk threads construct the composition. Housed in the original frame with brass corners.

History: Likely executed by one of his soldier followers just as woolies were created by sailors during this same time period. Memorial needleworks were very popular from 1780-1840, many crafted by schoolgirls. The use of the brass sequins and gold and silver threads however would point to a much different artisan.
