Item Details
Description
Germany, most likely from the Annaberg area, marked "1691" CE. Rare triple stein produced in the mining region of the Saxon Erz Mountains. Known as a 'fuddling-cup,' an earthenware drinking vessel of the 17th and 18th centuries, having the form of a cluster of three or more cups communicating at their bottoms in such a way that the entire vessel can be drained from any of them. Covered with dark brown vitrifying glaze which produced a lovely streaked pattern with areas of lighter and darker browns. Handles knotted together with added pewter hinged lids and flared bases. Each lid is marked "MMS - 1691." A remarkable example that is quite rare to find! Size: 4.75" W x 4.75" H (12.1 cm x 12.1 cm).

Provenance: Ex- The estate of Paul and Louise Bernheimer, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, CA - acquired before 1980
