Item Details
Description
Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lula, ca. 1940 to 1960 CE. A hand carved standing wooden fetish or power figure created by the Lula people, neighbors of the Yaka, with a characteristically expressive face with large coffee bean eyes, relatively naturalistic nose, rounded ears, and pronounced headdress or coiffure, the body wrapped in old cloth and encased with empowering fetish materials. Such figures were traditionally used as special purpose fetishes, sometimes called "pumbu.” Only the owner or person it was made for would ever know the exact meaning and use of such a figure. This particular example boasts fine patina and age. Size: 14" H (35.6 cm).
