PROVENANCE: A Paris, France and Charleston, SC Private Collection. A childhood proteee of Diogene Ulysse Napoleon Maillart, Rene-Charles Bellanger subsequently studied industrial and decorative design while continuing to paint for his own pleasure. He fought throughout World War I, after which he settled in Dreux, from where he travelled throughout the Ile de France region, especially the area of Seine-et-Marne) in search of landscapes. In 1923, he became an associate of Montezin, who introduced him to the group known as the French landscape artists (Paysagistes français), with whom he frequently painted out-of-doors, notably in the countryside around Granville. Bellanger exhibited regularly with the Salon des Independants, of which he became a member in 1927, and the Societe des Artistes Français, of which he also became a member in 1927, and whose silver medal he received in 1936. He was a close associate of Abel Bertram, Valtat and Vlaminck, but ceased painting during the German occupation of France in World War II. After 1945, he travelled once again, throughout France, Italy and Spain. He held one-man shows in Strasbourg (1932, 1934), Paris (1954, 1959, 1960, 1961), Rouen (1959), at the Musee d'Orleans (1960), and in Chartres (1964).
