North Carolina. Rowan County, Court of Pleas, Feb. Term 1855. Manuscript Document Signed by various government officials, including County Clerk and Jury Foreman. Indictment of John Moody, Jr. who, "in the night time...with force and arms...did unlawfully sell and deliver to Elick, a slave, one pint of Spirituous Liquor...not being for the owner or manager of said slave, or by the order of the owner or manager...against the peace and dignity of the State..." 8 x 11", 1 pg.+ docketing ("Trading with a Slave") and signatures on verso.
In most slave states before the Civil War, selling liquor to slaves was illegal - as was teaching them to read or write.
