Description
A fine collection of letters (approximately 20) and diary from Private Davis N. Hosmer of the 45th Massachusetts Regiment, Company F. The Regiment served in North Carolina. A farmer at age 18 he enlisted in 17 September 1862. He died of typhoid fever in Stanley Hospital, Newbern NC. He describes his service, life style, health and engagements. The unit was stationed in New Berne and engaged the Confederates in Goldsboro and the Battle of Kinston (Regiment lost 18 KIA and 59 wounded) and Whitehall. There is a final letter by Lt Hurd to the family announcing his death. Fighting in the South and succumbing to disease was quite typical for the common soldier.
