Latin America, Mexican, mid-19th century CE. Antique tin retablo depicting San Ignacio de Loyola (Saint Ignatius Loyola). Ignatius came from a noble family of the Basque country. His military education resulted in severe wounds during a battle between Pamplona and the French. During his recuperation, Ignatius read voraciously about Christ and the saints and decided to follow the path toward sainthood, taking a vow of chastity, presenting his sword to the Virgin of Montserrat, and preparing to travel to the Holy Land. He also wrote a training manual entitled Constitutions of the Society of Jesus. Shown with Saint Ignatius' characteristic bearded face in the habit of his order. These features were rarely deviated from as they were modeled upon a painting created by a contemporary of Ignatius, Alonso Sanchez Coello. He also holds a banner, although the details of it are obscured in this example due to some surface wear. Nevertheless the artist embellished the figure with some nice details.
