Description
Britain, Holme-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England, ca. 450 to 700 CE. This is a larger-than-average hammered iron spear point with a socket that seems to have been strengthened with additional iron in antiquity. Anglo-Saxons fought in a wedge-shaped formation with their king or leader on foot at the head of the wedge; heavy infantry, carrying spears like these, would have formed the point and the wings. Spear heads have been found either as grave goods or in votive deposits, which are often placed in rivers or other bodies of water for religious reasons that we do not fully understand today. A spear this large would probably have been a prestige item for its owner. Size: 18" L x 1.75" W (45.7 cm x 4.4 cm).
