Description
Fancy engraved silvered dial with rose points, degrees, and fleur-de-lis. Benjamin emigrated from Ireland in 1702 to Nottingham (Chester County) Maryland. Son Benjamin worked there and in Baltimore in the early years of the 19th century. This instrument is signed \\\"B. Chandlee/Nottingham.\\\" Although missing its original needle (now replaced) and both sights, this is a fine and early example of the period. Two sets of 3 additional holes drilled in rear of compass to hold later auxiliary sight vanes which were not original to the compass. Presently mounted on turned mahogany display base. 3\\\" x 13 1/3\\\", 5 1/2\\\" Dia. dial case.
