Description: Dry card compass housed in a mahogany bowl and superstructure. The glass is old if not original and it is a working instrument. Both sighting vanes have twisted line.
History: Born: 15 Jan 1787, Boston MADied: 24 Mar 1882, Salem, MASamuel Emery is considered one of the finest instrument makers of his day. He worked from circa 1809 to 1870 as an instrument maker in Salem, MA with a shop at 2 Water Street, (1809) and at 162 Derby Street (by 1864). He appeared on the 1870 census taken at Salem MA, listed as a nautical instrument maker.
