Hans Richter (German, 1888-1976)
Born Johannes Siegfried, Hans Richter studied at the Academy of Art in Berlin and Weimar, and the Academie Julian in Paris. By 1913, Richter had joined the avant-garde expressionist circles, and became a member of Die Aktion in 1914. Shortly thereafter, he was introduced to member of the Dada group, of which Richter would become closely associated. A member of the Association of Revolutionary Artists, Richter was forced to leave Germany, eventually emigrating to the United States where he directed numerous artistic films.
