Description

Tennessee pictorial needlework sampler by (Mary) Ann Pass of Blount County, worked in wool on linen, depicting a central red bird or cardinal and floral branch, with flowers, urn, and heart stitched above, surrounded by floral garland border. Signed ANN PASS WORK A PRESENT FOR BETTY SMITH 1857 (or 1867). Original deep molded wood frame. Sight - 11" H x 13" W. Framed - 16" H x 18" W. This sampler has been documented for the Tennessee Sampler Survey. Provenance: Descended in the family, recently acquired from a relative in Memphis. Mary Ann Pass was born December, 1847 in Blount County, TN, the daughter of Nathaniel Green Pass and Sara Morgan (both born in North Carolina). Her parents married in Blount County in 1844. Mary Ann is listed as living with her parents and siblings at their home in Blount County in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. She married Elbert Huffman on May 10, 1873 in Roane County and died Oct. 12 1933 in Loudon County. Betty Smith, the friend for whom the sampler was made, was also born in 1847 and lived in Knox County, where she married Joseph McMillin and remained for all her life. Condition

Overall very good condition with light toning and about 4 small scattered light stains to background area. Colors are bright with little to no fading or pest loss. Original frame. Not examined out of frame.
