Henry Moore (1898-1986)
Moore was born in 1898 in Yorkshire and started studying in 1919 at the Leeds School of Art (now Leeds College of Art). In 1921 he won a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art in London. While in London, Moore extended his knowledge of primitive art and sculpture, studying the ethnographic collections. In the 1930s he started teaching at the Royal College. At the outbreak of the Second World War he moved to Herfordshire, where he stayed for the rest of his life. He took part in several documenta in Kassel. His sculptural works are expressive abstractions of the human body, predominantly female figures. Many international museums own his woks, such as the Tate Gallery in London, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, or the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art near Copenhagen.
