Description
36 x 50 inches, signed lower right: Lockwood; Lockwood studied art at University of Kansas, took classes with Henry McCarter at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He served in both World Wars and as a colonel in WWII. He studied art in Paris and spent several years painting in the artist colony in Taos, New Mexico. 1938 marks the year he organized a new art department at UT Austin; and is noted to have developed programs and exhibitions fro students and faculty that were formative in creating the “foundations of modern art in Texas.” –Edwards. Lockwood’s work was widely exhibited during his active painting career. His paintings can be found in the following permanent collections: Dallas Museum of Art, Harwood Foundation, Taos, McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., UT Austin and the Whitney Museum of American Art. This painting was exhibited at the Rising Star of Texas show a the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, San Angelo, TX in 2006. An image of this painting was reproduced on page 139 in the book: Midcentury Modern Art in Texas, by: Katie Robinson Edwards © 2014, UT Press. In the book Edwards comments that in the 1950’s as this painting portrays he “shifted to another expressionistic mode, activating the canvas with what amounts to a disassembled geometry. The architectural underpinnings remain, but he organized the plains into a nonfigural dynamism.”
