30 x 36 inches, signed lower right: Spruce; This painting was exhibited in the show: Texas Modern: The Rediscovery of Early Texas Abstraction (1935-1965) at the Martin Museum of Art, Baylor University and then to the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas in 2010. It was also part of the exhibition titled: Modernist: Seven University of Texas Legacies (1935-1963) which took place at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum in Austin, TX in 2004. This piece was also included in the show, The Paintings of Everett Spruce, at the Martin Museum of Art, Baylor University, Waco, TX in 1997. Broken Tree, 1950, is described in the book: Midcentury Modern Art in Texas, by: Katie Robinson Edwards © 2014, UT Press. On page 146 she describes Spruce’s progression to the manifestation of technique and style indicative of his 1950’s pieces as he, “symbolically transformed the landscape or applied a Postimpressionist touch… his colors are higher keyed and the brushstrokes become discrete, merging together.” This painting is also illustrated as plate 1 on page 20 and again on page 56 of the book: Texas Modern, The Rediscovery of Early Texas Abstraction (1935-1965), © 2007 Baylor University
