Description
A green glazed decorated jar and lid from the Yuan Dynasty. These type of jars were used as cinerariums. The jar has highly stylized archaic motifs. Bright green glaze with some discoloration on one side from being buried underground touching mineral deposits. Domed lid with knob top. The jar seats on a unglazed pedestal foot. These type of vessels were found in an ancient Buddhist site in China close to the Vietnam border. The Yuan Dynasty was a period in China controlled by the Mongolian elite, including Kublai Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan. The Yuan tolerated outside influences, including Christian and Hindu missionaries, as well Buddhism and Buddhist monasteries. Dimensions: 17-3/4" H x 13-1/4" W (45 x 33.6 cm)
