Item Details
Description
Southeastern Italy, Gnathia (modern day Apulia), ca. 4th century BCE. Black-glazed pottery pelike with ribbed, vertical lines down its body and yellow and white decoration on the neck. The handles are curved and thin and the foot and mouth are wide and splayed. Size: 5.2" H (13.2 cm).

The pelike is a distinctive vessel produced throughout the Greek cultural zone during this time period that has a sagging belly, twin handles, and a wide, flat, flared rim. Artwork from the time shows that these were drinking vessels.

Provenance: Ex-private collection of Frank Sternberg, Zurich, Switzerland, collected between 1980-1985.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
