Description
DESCRIPTION: An archive of books and cased images from descendants of Lieutenant Nathaniel Felton (1655-1733), a prominent citizen of Salem, Massachusetts. His son Nathaniel Felton and his wife Ann Horn were participants in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 when they prepared and circulated a letter of support for a friend who was accused of witchcraft, a dangerous thing to do at the time. Includes: 1) A Genealogical History of the Felton Family, Descendants of Lieutenant Nathaniel Felton by Cyrus Felton. Published by Pratt Brothers, Marlborough: 1886. Cloth binding with gilt. Tipped in at front and back are two paperback pamphlets and a page of penciled notes relating to the Felton family as well as two letters, one from May B. Felton dated August 28, 1883 and from Minnie Felton dated December 17, 1891 (both providing family news). Notations to the front fixed endpaper note page numbers of family connections in the book that correspond to the other items included in this lot. 9-3/4" x 6-1/2". Overall wear and sunning to spine with loose binding and some page chipping. 2) Bible of Lydia Felton as marked and dated "January 24th, 1802" on front free endpaper. Printed by Dawson, Bensley, and Cooke, Oxford: 1799. Full leather. 7-1/4" x 5". Covers detached but included. Expected wear and toning to pages and overall. 3) Book "The Understanding Reader" belonging to Frederic W. Wood as marked and dated "Marlboro, January 2nd, 1813" to front free endpaper. Second Edition. Printed by Adams & Wilder, Leominster: 1804. Full leather. A Frederick William Wood is listed on page 163 of the geneology book above. 6-5/8" x 4". Overall wear, corner bumping and toning. 4) Druggist recipe book of Alonzo Wood as noted on cover (contents were written backwards and upside down making the personalized cover on the back). 3/4 leather with marbled boards. 6-1/4" x 7-3/4". Alonzo Felton Wood (1824-1885) was a druggist and apothecary in New Haven, Connecticut and is included on page 164 of the geneology book. He married Rachel Hodges (1824-). 6-1/4" x 7-3/4". Overall wear with front cover detached. 5) Cased sixth plate daguerreotype of Rachel and Alonzo Wood. Detached cover and overall wear. 6) Three cased sixth plate daguerreotypes (two matching) of Rachel and Margaret Hodges. All with detached covers and overall wear. 7) Cased sixth plate daguerreotype of two little girls, unidentified, in matching dresses. Cover detached and overall wear. 8) Typed two page letter from W.R. Felton to James P. Wood of New Haven, Connecticut dated March 28, 1933 on Felton Seed Co. letterhead. The letter is in response to Wood's reply to an initial correspondence by Felton making a family connection and providing information on Felton's work on the Felton family history. James P. Wood (1864-1935) was the youngest son of Alonzo Wood. 8-1/4" x 7". With envelope. Expected folds to letter. Envelope with wear. MEASUREMENTS: See Description. CONDITION: See Description.
