Item Details
Description
[UN] 2 Items. ++ WASHINGTON CONVERSATIONS ON INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION. Dumbarton Oaks, 1944. (GPO, 1945). Souvenir volume of the meetings that led to the San Francisco session that founded the United Nations. Two separate sessions were held at the Georgetown estate; one with the US, the UK, and Soviet Union, and one that also included China. Photo-illustrations include many notable leaders of the day. Group show of the Joint Steering Committee shows Alger Hiss, executive secretary to the conference, later convicted of perjury after being accused of espionage in 1948 (10th to last photo-plate). 4to. Blue paper covered boards with gilt title on front cover and spine. Sunned. Few scuff marks to surface. Upper right of photo-plates dampstained and spotted (mostly the last few, mostly at rear of volume). ++ Photograph signed by Donald Laughlin (1907-2009), who designed what became the basis of the UN logo during his time as head of the graphics unit at the OSS. The committee that adopted the final version of the UN flag was chaired by another American, Oliver Lundquist. Under the original design, the world map would have been a North Polar map with the US at its center (as opposed to the position the committee ultimately adopted, which has the North Pole at its center). The logo was to have a gray-blue background. (The UN never designated a color, but in practice a brighter blue has become the color used on UN flags.) Signed “Donald Laughlin/ January 27 ’05” in marker. Halftone. Image shows Secretary of State Edward R. Stettinius, Jr. signing the UN charter. Reportedly, President Truman stepped out and stood at his elbow, to tumultuous applause. In the photo, Truman is standing to his side. 18 ½” x 23 ½”. Mounted on backing. Edgewear, a few miniscule scuffs, most of image near fine.
